Wayne McCullough v the late Arturo Gatti (amateur boxing fight)

In 1988, as a 17 year old kid and being hailed as a “strong Olympic candidate” by Belfast’s own Jackie Fullerton, I faced 16 year old Arturo Gatti in the Ireland v Canada amateur boxing tournament at the Guildhall in Londonderry. We fought in the light flyweight division (7.5 stone or 105lbs).

In round 1, after 2 standing counts, Gatti’s corner threw in the towel giving me the win.

The late Gatti went on to become a 2 weight division World Champion and Hall of Famer – and incidentally one of my favorite fighters for his non stop style!

It is humbling to know I have shared the ring with so many great fighters both as an amateur and as a pro.

OK, I’ll say no more. If you’ve got 4 minutes, go ahead and watch for yourself and then share it will all of your friends. The SHARE buttons are below!

Big thanks to John Joe Duffy for sending me the DVD and to Wy Mac for her help getting it onto YouTube!

Couldn’t miss, Wayne. Great to see this, thanks for uploading. Great little scrap that and real signs of what you both would become – world champions. What was your amateur record, by the way? Did you and AG get a chance to discuss your childhood fight when you were adults?
